Dental Sealants for Kids
Sealants coat the grooves of molars to prevent cavities — one of the most cost-effective preventive treatments available.
What Is Dental Sealants for Kids?
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). The deep pits and fissures of molars are prime spots for cavities because they trap food and bacteria that brushing can't reach. Sealants fill and seal these grooves, creating a smooth surface that's easy to clean. They're most effective when applied soon after permanent molars erupt, typically around ages 6–7 and 11–13.
How It Works
The tooth is cleaned, dried, and treated with a mild acid solution to roughen the surface slightly for better bonding. The sealant is painted on in liquid form and hardened with a curing light. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth, is painless, and requires no anesthesia.
Key Benefits
- Reduces cavity risk in molars by up to 80%
- Quick, painless, and no drilling involved
- Lasts 5–10 years with normal chewing
- Cost-effective — far cheaper than filling a cavity
- Most insurance plans cover sealants for children
