Early Orthodontics for Children
Interceptive orthodontic treatment during childhood can prevent more complex problems from developing later.
What Is Early Orthodontics for Children?
Phase 1 (early) orthodontic treatment typically occurs between ages 6–10, while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. It's used to address specific developmental problems — narrow palate, severe crossbite, significant crowding, habits like thumb-sucking — that are much easier (and less expensive) to correct while the jaw is still growing. Not every child needs Phase 1; your orthodontist evaluates each case individually.
How It Works
Early treatment may use palatal expanders (to widen the upper jaw), partial braces on key teeth, space maintainers, or habit appliances. Treatment typically lasts 6–12 months, followed by a rest period before Phase 2 (full braces or aligners) begins in the early teen years.
Key Benefits
- Takes advantage of jaw growth to guide development
- Can eliminate the need for tooth extractions later
- Reduces severity and duration of Phase 2 treatment
- Addresses habits (thumb-sucking, tongue thrust) before permanent damage
- Improves self-esteem during critical social development years
