Tooth Extractions

When a tooth can't be saved, a prompt, skilled extraction sets you up for the best possible replacement outcome.

What Is Tooth Extractions?

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket. Extractions are performed when a tooth is too damaged or decayed to restore, severely infected, impacted (as with wisdom teeth), or needs to be removed to facilitate orthodontic treatment. Simple extractions are done with forceps under local anesthesia; surgical extractions are needed for broken, impacted, or root-fractured teeth.

How It Works

After numbing the area thoroughly, the dentist or oral surgeon loosens the tooth with an elevator instrument and removes it with forceps. For surgical extractions, a small incision may be made and bone removed. A gauze pad is placed to control bleeding. The whole procedure typically takes 20–40 minutes.

Key Benefits

  • Eliminates pain and infection from a severely damaged tooth
  • Modern anesthesia makes the procedure comfortable
  • Prevents infection from spreading to adjacent teeth or jaw
  • Sets the stage for implant or bridge replacement
