Retainers & Post-Orthodontic Care

Retainers are essential after braces or aligners to keep your teeth in their new positions permanently.

What Is Retainers & Post-Orthodontic Care?

After orthodontic treatment ends, teeth have a strong tendency to shift back toward their original positions — a process called relapse. Retainers hold teeth in place while the surrounding bone and soft tissue stabilize. There are two main types: removable retainers (Hawley wire retainers or clear Essix retainers) and fixed bonded retainers (a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth).

How It Works

Immediately after braces or aligners, a retainer is fitted. Most patients wear retainers full-time for 3–6 months, then nights-only for years — or indefinitely. Fixed retainers stay in permanently but need careful flossing with a threader.

Key Benefits

  • Protects your orthodontic investment long-term
  • Fixed retainers work passively without any effort from the patient
  • Clear Essix retainers are invisible when worn
  • Prevents expensive retreatment due to relapse
